Troubles End is a successful brewery and restaurant operating out of a rented space in Collegeville, PA. With a desire for growth and a great location near walking trails, the company wanted to expand its food service options and add an outdoor dining area. The problem: the desired restaurant space was on the opposite side of a jigsaw-like multi-tenant building. Expanding their dining options would require a complex and fragmented build-out, resulting in an awkward non-contiguous space.

After developing an initial feasibility study, we showed Troubles End that their planned renovation amounted to a big investment with little promised return. Armed with that knowledge, our strategy team helped them clarify their long-term goals and develop a plan to achieve them.

Value Proposition

Once we did this, the team realized that an expensive restaurant expansion—in a building they didn't own–would not advance their true vision: to open multiple locations across the region. However, a new canning facility and bottle shop would advance that vision by offering exciting new revenue streams. To support this new business plan, we learned everything we could about the brewing, canning, and delivery processes.

We developed a plan that optimized their new operation and maximized floor space to ensure scalability. We also worked to ensure the required plumbing and new brewing systems didn’t disrupt the other tenant spaces.

Key Attributes

The location of the existing brewery required some creative planning and infrastructure updates to maintain its license and comply with regulatory standards. Addressing these existing conditions was a critical aspect of the design and construction project, as they present unique challenges requiring innovative solutions to achieve the goals for the expansion and new customer experience.

Ultimately, our business strategy and accompanying design will cost less than half as much as a restaurant expansion while positioning Troubles End Brewing for future growth, ensuring more people can enjoy their thoughtfully crafted brews.
